Speedee was McDonald’s first official mascot.
The character represented the restaurant’s original emphasis on speed and efficiency. Speedee was depicted as a chef-like figure and appeared in the company’s earliest branding after the McDonald brothers introduced their streamlined service system.
Ronald McDonald later became the company’s most famous mascot, but he was not the first. Ronald’s introduction in the early 1960s reflected McDonald’s growing focus on family marketing and children’s advertising.
Grimace and Mayor McCheese came later as members of McDonaldland. Because those characters are more familiar to many modern audiences, they are sometimes incorrectly identified as the original mascot. Historically, the first official mascot was Speedee.
