The Hamburglar was originally introduced as a McDonald’s character who stole hamburgers.
He became part of the McDonaldland cast in the early 1970s. Early versions were presented as a small, mischievous figure dressed in black and white, with a cape and a speech style that made his dialogue sound unusual. His role was to create comic conflict by trying to take hamburgers.
The character was later redesigned into a younger-looking figure with a more conventional speaking voice. That change made him easier for children to understand and gave the character a less threatening appearance while preserving the hamburger-stealing joke.
The Hamburglar is sometimes confused with Captain Crook, another McDonaldland villain associated with Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. Their targets were different, which is a useful way to distinguish the two characters in McDonald’s advertising history.
