The McDonald's character originally called the Lone Jogger was the Hamburglar.
The character debuted in 1971 under a more frightening design and the name Lone Jogger. McDonald's later changed both the appearance and the personality, turning him into the mischievous Hamburglar who tried to steal hamburgers in McDonaldland commercials.
The early and later versions are easy to confuse because the character retained the same basic role: a comic hamburger thief. His costume, facial features, and behavior became friendlier as McDonald's focused increasingly on children and family audiences.
The Hamburglar's name is a pun combining “hamburger” with “burglar.” He became one of McDonald's most recognizable fictional figures, although his prominence declined as the company moved away from its larger McDonaldland cast in later advertising.
