Ronald McDonald was McDonald’s official spokesperson and clown mascot.
The character emerged in the early 1960s and became the public face of the company’s child-focused advertising. His red hair, yellow clothing, red-and-white striped details, and clown makeup made him visually distinct from the brand’s architectural Golden Arches.
Ronald was later placed within McDonaldland, where he interacted with other recurring characters. This gave McDonald’s a flexible storytelling format for commercials, promotions, and children’s events.
Ronald McDonald is sometimes grouped together with every McDonaldland figure, but his role was different. Characters such as Grimace and Mayor McCheese were supporting figures, whereas Ronald functioned as the brand’s principal spokesperson and mascot.
