The Hamburglar was introduced by McDonald’s in 1971 as a character who wanted to steal the chain’s hamburgers.
He became one of the most recognizable figures in McDonaldland, the fictional advertising world created for McDonald’s family marketing. His original design was more adult-looking, with a black mask, striped clothing, and a speech pattern centered on hamburgers. The character was later redesigned to appear shorter, younger, and more cartoon-like.
The Hamburglar’s role was deliberately comic rather than threatening. His repeated attempts to take hamburgers created a simple conflict for commercials and promotional stories, while Ronald McDonald and other characters acted as the friendly heroes of the setting.
He is sometimes confused with Captain Crook, another McDonaldland character associated with Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. Mayor McCheese was a separate character whose head resembled a cheeseburger. These distinctions are part of the campaign’s branded character system.
