Which McDonald’s character traditionally tries to steal hamburgers?

The story behind the answer

The Hamburglar is the McDonald’s character traditionally depicted trying to steal hamburgers.

He became part of the McDonaldland cast in the early 1970s. The character’s defining joke was his obsession with hamburgers, expressed through mischievous attempts to take them. His striped clothing, cape, and stylized speech helped distinguish him from McDonald’s other advertising characters.

The Hamburglar is sometimes confused with characters from other fast-food campaigns, particularly Captain Crook, who was associated with the competing McDonald’s-style character universe used by Burger Chef. Within McDonaldland, however, the hamburger thief is specifically the Hamburglar.

McDonald’s later redesigned the character with a more contemporary appearance and a less childlike presentation. Despite those changes, the basic branding idea remained consistent: the Hamburglar personified playful temptation and made the hamburger itself part of the story.
