Speedee served as McDonald's first official mascot before Ronald McDonald.
The chef-hat character appeared in the late 1940s, when the McDonald brothers were promoting their Speedee Service System. His name and pose communicated speed, consistency, and the quick-service model that distinguished the restaurant from traditional drive-ins.
Ronald McDonald later became the company's best-known character, but he did not replace Speedee immediately as part of a single planned mascot handoff. McDonald's branding gradually moved toward the Golden Arches and a larger cast of family-oriented characters.
Speedee is also easy to confuse with the Golden Arches because both belong to the company's earliest visual identity. Speedee was a personified service concept; the arches were an architectural and graphic symbol.
