Which McDonald's character is a striped burglar introduced in 1971?

The story behind the answer

The Hamburglar is the striped burglar character introduced by McDonald's in 1971.

The Hamburglar was part of McDonaldland, the fictional world McDonald's used in advertising aimed largely at children. His basic story involved trying to steal hamburgers, especially Big Macs, while Ronald McDonald and other characters protected the food or caught him.

The first version was a small, somewhat menacing character with a black mask and a speech style that sounded like scrambled words. McDonald's later redesigned him as a taller, friendlier childlike figure wearing a striped shirt, cape, gloves, and a wide-brimmed hat. The redesign made the character more suitable for mainstream family advertising.

The Hamburglar is often confused with Captain Crook, another McDonaldland villain associated with Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. Grimace and Birdie were also McDonald's characters, but neither was the striped burger thief. The character's name is a pun combining “hamburger” with “burglar.”
