The Hamburglar debuted in 1971 as a striped thief who stole hamburgers.
The character was part of McDonaldland, McDonald’s fictional advertising world populated by mascots linked to the restaurant and its menu. The Hamburglar’s visual identity included a black-and-white striped outfit, a cape, and a playful thief persona centered on hamburgers.
The original Hamburglar design was more impish and childlike than the later version. McDonald’s eventually updated the character’s appearance, making him taller and more stylized while keeping the central idea of a hamburger-loving trickster.
The Hamburglar is distinct from Grimace, who began with a milkshake-stealing role, and from Mayor McCheese, whose design linked him to the restaurant’s signature cheeseburger. These characters were all part of McDonaldland branding but represented different jokes and menu associations.
