Which McDonald’s character debuted in 1963 as the chain’s first national mascot?

The story behind the answer

Ronald McDonald debuted in 1963 as McDonald’s first national mascot.

The character was created to give McDonald’s a friendly, recognizable figure for children and family advertising. Television personality Willard Scott portrayed Ronald in the earliest commercials, including appearances wearing a food-themed costume.

Ronald’s design changed over time. Early versions had a cup-shaped hat, a tray of food around the waist, and a more clown-like appearance than the modern character. The company later established a broader fictional McDonaldland cast around him.

Ronald McDonald is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar, Grimace, or Mayor McCheese. Those characters joined McDonaldland advertising later and served different roles, while Ronald remained its central mascot. McDonald’s also used the Golden Arches and the Speedee figure as major visual symbols, but Ronald was the chain’s best-known humanlike brand character.
