Ronald McDonald became McDonald’s primary clown mascot after debuting in advertising in 1963.
The character was created to give McDonald’s a memorable personality who could represent the restaurant to children and families. His bright costume, red hair, and exaggerated clown design made him easy to recognize in television commercials and promotional appearances.
Ronald later appeared alongside other McDonald’s characters, including the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese. Those figures helped populate the fictional McDonaldland setting, but Ronald remained the company’s central mascot.
The character’s design and role changed over the decades as McDonald’s advertising evolved. Ronald’s first television portrayal was by Willard Scott, while later performers and campaigns presented more standardized versions of the mascot.
