The Golden Arches are McDonald’s brand symbol formed by two yellow arches resembling the letter M.
The arches began as architectural features on McDonald’s restaurants. Their bright color and elevated placement made the buildings easy to recognize from roads and highways, especially when restaurants were designed for car-based travel.
In 1962, the arches were combined into a stylized logo. This transformed a building feature into a portable corporate mark that could appear on signs, packaging, advertising, uniforms, and other brand materials. The symbol’s shape also suggests the first letter of McDonald’s, although its origin is tied to the restaurant architecture.
The Golden Arches are not the same as Speedee, the earlier chef mascot used in McDonald’s branding. They are also distinct from the McCafé name and the Happy Meal product line. Their importance comes from making the restaurant recognizable even when no words are visible.
