Which McDonald’s advertising character is a giant talking moon who appeared in 1980s promotions?

The story behind the answer

Mac Tonight was McDonald’s giant talking moon character who appeared in 1980s promotions.

Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 as a character for McDonald’s dinner-hour advertising. He had a crescent-moon head, wore sunglasses and formal evening clothes, and sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife.” The campaign was designed to encourage customers to visit McDonald’s at night, a period the company wanted to promote more strongly.

Mac Tonight is often mistaken for a general McDonaldland mascot or for a moon-themed version of another character. He was instead a separate advertising creation with a specific evening-meal purpose. His visual design and musical presentation made the campaign noticeably different from the clown and food characters used elsewhere in McDonald’s marketing.

The character became especially associated with the late 1980s and was later removed from U.S. advertising. His name is therefore a branding-history answer, not the name of a generic moon mascot.
