Which mathematician proved the Noether theorem linking symmetries with conservation laws?

The story behind the answer

Emmy Noether proved Noether’s theorem, which links continuous symmetries in physical systems with conservation laws.

Her 1918 theorem showed that every differentiable continuous symmetry of an action corresponds to a conserved quantity. For example, time-translation symmetry leads to conservation of energy, while spatial-translation symmetry leads to conservation of momentum.

The result became foundational in modern physics, especially classical mechanics, quantum theory, and general relativity. Noether’s mathematical work also transformed abstract algebra through her study of ideals, rings, and invariant theory.

Noether worked in an era when women faced major barriers in universities. She taught at the University of Göttingen before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933 and joining Bryn Mawr College in the United States.
