Which mascot represented McDonald’s before Ronald McDonald became the company’s main character?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s mascot before Ronald McDonald became the company’s main character.

Speedee was a small chef character based on the company’s speedy service concept. The McDonald brothers used him in early restaurant signs and promotional materials after opening their redesigned self-service restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1948.

Speedee is often confused with Speedee Service, the McDonald brothers’ operating system. The mascot visually represented that system, while the phrase described the quick, limited-menu restaurant model. Ronald McDonald later became the more recognizable face of the brand after his television debut in 1963.

The change reflected McDonald’s growing focus on family advertising and fictional characters. Speedee nevertheless remains an important part of the company’s early branding history and is visible in some historical McDonald’s logos and memorabilia.
