McDonald's introduced Speedee in 1948 as a mascot representing its speedy service.
Speedee was a chef-like character with a hamburger-shaped head. He appeared in early McDonald's signs and promotional materials, helping communicate the restaurant's central promise: food prepared quickly through the brothers' Speedee Service System.
The mascot predates Ronald McDonald by more than a decade. As McDonald's developed a broader family-oriented identity in the 1960s, Ronald and later McDonaldland characters became more prominent, while Speedee gradually disappeared from consumer-facing branding.
Speedee is sometimes confused with the later Hamburglar because both belong to McDonald's advertising history. Their roles were different: Speedee represented the restaurant's original operating system, whereas the Hamburglar was a fictional McDonaldland character created for children's marketing.
