Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in November 2023.
The transaction closed on November 22, 2023, after Broadcom announced the approximately $69 billion deal in May 2022. VMware was known for virtualization software used to run multiple virtual machines on computer servers.
The acquisition expanded Broadcom’s infrastructure-software business beyond its established semiconductor operations. Broadcom had already purchased CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec’s enterprise-security business in 2019, making software an increasingly important part of its portfolio.
A common mix-up is confusing Broadcom Inc. with the earlier Broadcom Corporation. Avago Technologies acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name; the modern company is Broadcom Inc. VMware remains a separate brand within Broadcom’s software operations.
