The protected area was established in 1938 and 1939 as King George V National Park. After Malaysian independence, it was renamed Taman Negara, meaning “national park” in Malay. The park covers about 4,343 square kilometres and contains lowland dipterocarp forest, montane rainforest, rivers and limestone features.

Mount Tahan, also called Gunung Tahan, rises to 2,187 metres and is the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia. The mountain lies within the Tahan Range and is a major trekking destination. Taman Negara is often described as protecting one of the world’s oldest rainforests, but age claims can vary depending on whether they refer to the forest ecosystem, underlying geology or surviving trees. The park is also home to species such as Malayan tigers, Asian elephants, seladang and the Malayan peacock-pheasant.
