Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in November 2023.
The transaction, announced in May 2022, valued VMware at approximately $69 billion and combined Broadcom’s semiconductor business with VMware’s enterprise virtualization and cloud-software operations. Regulatory approval was required in several jurisdictions, including the United States, the European Union, and China.
Broadcom was founded in 1991 as a technology company focused on semiconductor products. It later expanded substantially through acquisitions, including the purchase of CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec’s enterprise-security business in 2019. These deals helped shift the company beyond chips into infrastructure software.
A common mix-up is confusing Broadcom with Avago Technologies. Avago acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name; the resulting company is Broadcom Inc. VMware remains a distinct software brand, although Broadcom reorganized its product and partner strategy after the acquisition. Broadcom’s large semiconductor portfolio includes networking, broadband, wireless-connectivity, storage, and custom-chip technologies, helping explain its position among the world’s highest-value public companies.
