The Madonna music video directed by Fincher and released in 1990 was Vogue. The black-and-white video became one of Madonna’s most recognizable visual statements and helped bring voguing from New York’s underground ballroom culture to a mass television audience.
Fincher shot the video at Burbank Studios in California on February 10–11, 1990, completing the production in about 16 hours because Madonna was rehearsing for her Blond Ambition World Tour. Its polished compositions, formal poses and Hollywood-inspired glamour drew heavily on studio-era portrait photography.
The video features Madonna and dancers in sharply styled black-and-white settings, with choreography associated with the House of Xtravaganza and the ballroom scene. It premiered on MTV on March 29, 1990, and was nominated for multiple honors at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards.
The likely confusion comes from Fincher’s other Madonna collaborations. He also directed “Express Yourself” and “Oh Father” in 1989, and later made “Bad Girl” in 1993. “Music,” “Frozen” and “Like a Prayer” were directed by other filmmakers.
