Palace on Wheels is the luxury train that has operated in India since 1982 and takes its name from royal railway carriages.
The train was launched by Indian Railways and the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation to promote tourism in Rajasthan. Its carriages were designed to evoke the private saloons once used by the maharajas and colonial-era officials.
The service typically travels through destinations associated with Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Bharatpur, as well as Agra on many itineraries. Routes and schedules have changed over time.
India has several other luxury trains. Maharajas’ Express began later, while Deccan Odyssey and Golden Chariot operate on different regional itineraries.
