Which luxury-goods company owns Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, and Hennessy?

The story behind the answer

LVMH owns Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, and Hennessy.

LVMH is the abbreviation for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a French luxury-goods group headquartered in Paris. Its portfolio spans wines and spirits, fashion and leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, watches and jewelry, and selective retailing.

The group was created in 1987 through the merger of Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy. Moët Hennessy itself had been formed in 1971 by combining Moët & Chandon with Hennessy. Bernard Arnault became involved during LVMH’s early restructuring and has led the group for decades.

Louis Vuitton is the group’s fashion-and-leather-goods house, while Moët & Chandon is a Champagne producer and Hennessy makes cognac. LVMH is sometimes confused with Kering, another major French luxury group whose brands include Gucci and Saint Laurent. Brand ownership and licensing arrangements can differ, so a brand’s name alone does not always identify its parent company.
