Guccio Gucci established Gucci in Florence in 1921.
Gucci opened a small shop and workshop specializing in luggage and leather goods, drawing on his experience working at London’s Savoy Hotel and observing the travel accessories used by wealthy guests. The company’s early products included finely crafted bags, trunks, and equestrian goods.
The business expanded through family involvement and became internationally known for Italian craftsmanship, distinctive patterns, and fashion collections. A common mix-up is placing Gucci’s founding in Rome or Milan; the company began in Florence. The House of Gucci later became part of the French luxury group Kering, but its origins remain tied to Guccio Gucci’s 1921 shop.
