Which luxury brand is Toyota's upscale division?

The story behind the answer

Toyota’s upscale division is Lexus.

Lexus was created as Toyota’s global luxury brand, emerging from a secret project launched in 1983 to develop a premium sedan. The project produced the LS, unveiled in 1989 alongside the new Lexus name in the United States. Its early emphasis was quietness, refinement, reliability and high-quality customer service rather than simply adding expensive trim to an existing Toyota.

Lexus is sometimes confused with Acura or Infiniti, but those are the luxury marques created by Honda and Nissan respectively. Genesis is Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand. Lexus also differs from Toyota in branding and dealership presentation, although the companies share engineering resources and production networks.

The brand originally focused on markets outside Japan. Toyota did not establish Lexus as a domestic Japanese marque until 2005; before then, equivalent cars were sold in Japan under Toyota names. Lexus later expanded into SUVs, hybrids and performance models, including the F marque.
