Which longtime collaborator co-wrote Sunset Boulevard with Billy Wilder?

The story behind the answer

Charles Brackett co-wrote Sunset Boulevard with Billy Wilder. Their partnership produced one of Hollywood’s sharpest examinations of fame, aging, and the film industry’s appetite for novelty.

Brackett and Wilder began developing the screenplay in 1948. They had already collaborated on films including Ninotchka, The Emperor Waltz, and The Lost Weekend, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Sunset Boulevard became their final major collaboration.

The screenplay was not written in isolation: D. M. Marshman Jr. joined the project in 1948 and became the third credited writer. Brackett also served as the film’s producer. A common mix-up is to credit Ernest Lehman or I. A. L. Diamond, both important screenwriters associated with other Hollywood films, but neither wrote Sunset Boulevard. The three credited writers shared the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the 1950 film.
