Which London Underground station was originally named Strand when it opened in 1907?

The story behind the answer

Aldwych station was originally named Strand when it opened in 1907.

The station formed the southern terminus of a short branch from Holborn, built by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway. Its original name reflected the nearby Strand, one of central London’s historic streets. In 1915, the station was renamed Aldwych to match the surrounding area and avoid confusion with the Strand name used elsewhere in the Underground system.

The branch never attracted the passenger numbers achieved by the main Piccadilly line route. Its service was therefore limited for much of its life, commonly operating as a shuttle. The station finally closed to passengers in 1994.

Charing Cross and Leicester Square are nearby central stations, which can make the history easy to muddle. Neither was originally named Strand in the relevant 1907 opening.
