Which London Underground station was formerly known as Strand?
Answer
Charing Cross
Answer
Charing Cross
Charing Cross station was formerly known as Strand.
The station’s Northern line platforms opened as Strand in 1907. The name reflected the nearby Strand, one of central London’s best-known streets. In 1979, the station was renamed Charing Cross when the new Jubilee line station opened there and the authorities wanted a unified name.
The station later ceased to be a through station for the Jubilee line when that route was extended eastward in 1999. Jubilee line platforms at Charing Cross were closed to regular passenger service, though they remain useful for special operations and filming.
This history can cause confusion because “Strand” also appears in the names of nearby places and because Aldwych station, formerly called Strand, was a separate Underground station. Aldwych closed permanently in 1994, while Charing Cross remains an active station.
