Which London Underground station was called Gillespie Road until 1932?

The story behind the answer

Arsenal Underground station was called Gillespie Road until 1932.

The station opened as Gillespie Road in 1906 on the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway. It was renamed Arsenal in 1932 after Herbert Chapman, manager of Arsenal Football Club, campaigned for a station name associated with the club's nearby Highbury stadium.

Arsenal station is on the Piccadilly line and remains unusual because its name refers to a football club rather than the district immediately around it. Highbury stadium closed as Arsenal's home in 2006, but the station retained its name.

The change illustrates how Underground station names can reflect local institutions and landmarks. Gillespie Road continues to be the name of the road outside the station, which helps explain why older maps and historical references use a different name.
