Amersham is the highest London Underground station above sea level, standing at about 150 metres.
The station is in Buckinghamshire, at the western end of the Metropolitan line. It opened in 1892 as the Metropolitan Railway extended its service beyond the original suburban network. Amersham became part of London Underground when the system was reorganised in the twentieth century.
Amersham is also served by Chiltern Railways, making it one of the Underground network’s notable shared main-line stations. It is in Travelcard Zone 9, the outermost zone used by London’s rail-fare system. A common mix-up is Chesham, the Metropolitan line’s northern terminus; although it is farther north, Amersham has the higher station elevation. The nearby Chiltern Hills help explain why this part of the Underground network is considerably higher than central London stations.
