Arnos Grove is famous for Charles Holden’s circular 1930s ticket hall.
The Piccadilly line station opened in 1932 during the major northward extension from Finsbury Park. Holden designed a group of stations for this project in a modernist style, using strong geometric forms, brickwork and concrete details.
Arnos Grove’s circular drum-shaped ticket hall is its best-known feature. The large open interior and high roof created a spacious entrance while giving the station a memorable silhouette. The building is now recognised as an important example of London Underground architecture.
Nearby stations on the same extension, including Southgate and Oakwood, also have notable Holden designs, but their forms differ. Arnos Grove’s round ticket hall is the feature that most clearly distinguishes it from those neighbours.
