Which London Underground station is closest to the Houses of Parliament?

The story behind the answer

Westminster station is the London Underground station closest to the Houses of Parliament.

The station stands beside Parliament Square on the north bank of the River Thames, directly opposite the Palace of Westminster. It is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines, making it an important interchange in central London.

Westminster station opened in 1868 as part of the Metropolitan District Railway, the predecessor of today’s District line. Its modern appearance was shaped by major redevelopment connected with the Jubilee line extension, which opened in 1999.

St James’s Park is also nearby and serves the District and Circle lines, while Embankment and Waterloo are across or nearer the river. Those stations can be useful for particular destinations, but Westminster is the closest Underground station to Parliament.
