Which London Underground station has the network's longest escalator, rising about 27.5 metres?

The story behind the answer

Angel station has the London Underground's longest escalator, rising about 27.5 metres.

The station is on the Northern line between King's Cross St Pancras and Old Street. Its escalator was installed during a major rebuilding project completed in 1992. The reconstruction replaced a cramped island platform with a wide single platform and created a much larger ticket hall.

The escalator is about 60 metres long and has one of the steepest and most visually striking escalator arrangements on the Underground. Passengers travel from the ticket hall down to the platform level in a single long ascent or descent rather than using several short escalators.

A frequent confusion is between the longest escalator and the deepest station. Hampstead is the deepest station by platform depth, while Angel is famous for its escalator. The two records describe different parts of the Underground's engineering.
