Which London Underground station closed permanently to passengers in 1994 after serving as Aldwych?

The story behind the answer

Aldwych station closed permanently to London Underground passengers in 1994.

The station opened in 1907 as Strand, serving a short branch from Holborn. It was renamed Aldwych in 1915, after the street and district at the branch’s southern end. The branch had relatively low passenger numbers, and services were reduced over time, often using a single shuttle train.

Aldwych’s limited traffic, ageing infrastructure and the cost of modernisation eventually led to closure. Passenger services ended on 30 September 1994. The station has since been used for filming, photography and historical demonstrations, making its preserved interiors familiar even though it is no longer a public Tube stop.

Aldwych is sometimes confused with other closed stations such as Down Street or York Road. Those stations also have separate closure histories, but Aldwych is the station whose passenger service ended in 1994.
