The Jubilee line was the first London Underground line to use platform screen doors at a station.
Platform screen doors were installed at stations on the Jubilee line extension, which opened in stages between 1999 and 2000. The doors separate the platform from the track and open only when a train is correctly aligned, improving safety and helping regulate airflow in busy stations.
They are particularly associated with the Jubilee line’s newer stations, including Westminster, London Bridge, Canada Water and North Greenwich. The system was designed into the extension’s modern architecture rather than added to older stations built around traditional open platforms.
The Jubilee line is therefore different from most of the historic Underground network, where passengers wait beside an unprotected platform edge. The Elizabeth line is a later railway and should not be treated as the first Tube line to use this technology.
