The District line serves the greatest number of London Underground stations, with 60 stations on its route.
It is one of the original sub-surface lines and began operating in 1868 between South Kensington and Westminster. The line expanded through west and southwest London, eventually developing a complex network of branches and shared sections.
The District line is notable for serving Wimbledon, Richmond and Ealing Broadway, as well as destinations in east London such as Upminster. Its broad geography helps explain why it has more stations than any other Underground line.
Station counts can be confusing because lines share tracks and interchange stations, and because route descriptions may change when branches are counted. The District line's published total refers to the stations served by the line across its full network.
