Which London Underground line runs between Epping and West Ruislip?

The story behind the answer

The Central line runs between Epping and West Ruislip, with an additional western branch to Ealing Broadway.

Epping is the line’s eastern terminus in Essex, while West Ruislip is its western terminus near the boundary between Greater London and Buckinghamshire. This gives the route a broad east-west span across London and nearby counties.

The line began as the Central London Railway, which opened in 1900 between Shepherd’s Bush and Bank. Later extensions transformed it from a compact central railway into one of the Underground’s longest routes. The eastern extension to Epping followed former Great Eastern Railway routes, while the western branches were developed through suburban expansion.

West Ruislip can be confused with Ruislip, which is served by the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines. Epping is also distinct from Theydon Bois and Debden, which are nearby stations on the same eastern section.
