Which London Underground line opened in 1979, becoming the first new Tube line in 20 years?

The story behind the answer

The Jubilee line opened in 1979, becoming the first new London Underground line in 20 years.

The line initially ran between Stanmore and Charing Cross. It was created by extending and renaming the former Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, commonly called the Bakerloo line's Stanmore branch. The name “Jubilee” commemorated Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee year.

A major extension to the Docklands and Stratford opened in stages in 1999. That extension transformed the line's role, connecting central London with Canary Wharf, North Greenwich, and Stratford. Many of its stations use large, spacious designs and platform-edge doors, features that distinguish the modern extension from the older central section.

The Jubilee line is therefore both a 1979 railway and a much newer east London route. Its opening date refers to the original line, while the current route reflects the 1990s extension.
