Which London prison held Guy Fawkes after his arrest for the Gunpowder Plot?

The story behind the answer

The Tower of London held Guy Fawkes after his arrest for the Gunpowder Plot.

Fawkes was discovered beneath the House of Lords in the early hours of 5 November 1605 while guarding the gunpowder intended for the planned explosion. He was initially questioned and held before being taken to the Tower, where the authorities subjected him to interrogation and torture.

His signature changed dramatically during this period. His first confession was brief, but later statements revealed more about the conspiracy and named fellow plotters. The famous final signature, “Guido Fawkes,” is often reproduced as evidence of his condition after torture.

The Tower is sometimes described simply as a prison, but it was also a royal fortress and palace complex. Fawkes was tried in Westminster in January 1606, not at the Tower, and was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
