Which lizard is known for its large frill used for defense?

The story behind the answer

The frilled-neck lizard is known for its large frill used as a defense display. When threatened, it unfolds the skin around its neck, opens its mouth, hisses, and may lash its tail to appear larger and more dangerous.

This Australian and New Guinean lizard is formally called Chlamydosaurus kingii. The frill is supported by rod-like hyoid bones and normally lies folded against the shoulders. It can also be displayed during communication and territorial contests between males.

Frilled-neck lizards spend most of their time in trees, where their brown, gray, and orange coloring provides camouflage. They usually descend to the ground to hunt insects and other invertebrates. A common mix-up is confusing their skin frill with the bony neck shields of horned dinosaurs; the lizard’s structure is flexible cartilage and skin, not a solid bony plate.
