Which living reptile is the largest by total length and body mass?
Answer
Saltwater crocodile
Answer
Saltwater crocodile
The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile by total length and body mass.
Saltwater crocodiles inhabit coastal waters, estuaries, rivers, and wetlands across parts of South and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Very large males can exceed 6 metres in length, although most adults are smaller. Their broad heads, powerful jaws, and muscular tails make them formidable aquatic predators.
Despite its name, the species is not restricted to the sea. It can travel through brackish estuaries and freshwater rivers, and individuals have been recorded far from the coast. Its ability to tolerate salt water helped it spread across a wide tropical range.
The Nile crocodile is another very large crocodilian, but it is generally ranked below the saltwater crocodile in maximum size. The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard, not the largest reptile overall, and the green anaconda is a snake rather than a crocodilian.
