Which literary club did C.S. Lewis help lead with J.R.R. Tolkien?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis helped lead the literary club known as the Inklings with J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Inklings were an informal Oxford discussion and reading group rather than a formal society with membership rules or published proceedings. The group became associated with Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College and with meetings at the Eagle and Child pub, which its members called the Bird and Baby.

Members read works in progress aloud and discussed literature, mythology, theology, and language. Tolkien shared drafts connected with The Lord of the Rings, while Lewis presented material that became part of his fiction and nonfiction.

The Inklings are sometimes described as an official university organization, but that is misleading. They were a changing circle of friends and writers. Other associated figures included Charles Williams and Owen Barfield, both influential in Lewis’s intellectual life.
