Which launch vehicle sent Voyager 1 into space? Titan IIIE sent it into space on September 5, 1977.
The launch took place from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Voyager 1 was carried by a Titan IIIE fitted with a Centaur upper stage, a combination designed to send heavy planetary probes onto high-energy trajectories.
The launch was almost jeopardized when the Titan's second-stage engine shut down prematurely, leaving propellant unused. The Centaur stage compensated with an unusually long burn, giving Voyager 1 enough velocity to reach its planned path. A Star 37E solid-fuel stage also helped provide the final boost.
A common mix-up is Atlas-Centaur, another important planetary-launch combination. Titan IIIE launched both Voyager spacecraft, as well as the Viking probes and Helios solar missions. Voyager 1 launched after Voyager 2 but followed a shorter route to Jupiter and Saturn.
