The French and Indian War was the North American theater of a much wider struggle involving Britain, France, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Sweden, Spain, and Portugal. In North America, fighting began in 1754 over competing British and French claims, especially in the Ohio Country. The European war is conventionally dated from 1756 to 1763.

The names can be confusing because the North American conflict and the global war did not begin and end on exactly the same schedule. In the United States, “French and Indian War” commonly refers to the 1754–1763 colonial theater. In Europe and Canada, those campaigns are generally treated as part of the Seven Years’ War, which also included major fighting in Europe, India, the Caribbean, and elsewhere.

The conflict ended with the 1763 Treaty of Paris. France ceded most of its North American possessions east of the Mississippi to Britain, transforming the balance of power in the continent and helping create tensions that later contributed to the American Revolution.
