Which large shaggy Sesame Street dog is owned by Linda?

The story behind the answer

Barkley is the large, shaggy Sesame Street dog owned by Linda.

Barkley is a large, friendly, shaggy dog who lives on Sesame Street and belongs to Linda, the neighborhood librarian. Unlike many of the show's talking Muppets, Barkley generally communicates through barking, body language, and interaction with the human characters. Linda communicates using American Sign Language, and Barkley knows a few signs as well.

The character was originally called “Woof-Woof,” a descriptive name that reflects his early identity before he became Barkley. His physical size and shaggy appearance make him easy to distinguish from later Sesame Street pets, including Elmo's smaller, music-loving puppy Tango. Barkley is also not Buster, a different dog associated with the show's human characters.

Barkley appeared in the 1983 television special Big Bird in China, extending his role beyond ordinary neighborhood sketches. Several puppeteers have operated him over the years, including Toby Towson, Fred Garbo, Brian Muehl, and others. The combination of his size, shaggy coat, ownership by Linda, and sign-language connection makes Barkley the canonical answer.
