Georgian is the national language of Georgia and is written in the Georgian script.
Georgian belongs to the Kartvelian, or South Caucasian, language family. It is the largest Kartvelian language by number of speakers and serves as Georgia’s principal language of government, education, media, and public life.
The Georgian writing tradition has several historical scripts. The modern form, Mkhedruli, is the script most commonly used today. Earlier forms include Asomtavruli and Nuskhuri; together, the living Georgian writing tradition is recognized for its distinctive visual design.
Georgian is not part of the Indo-European or Turkic families, despite Georgia’s location among regions where those language families are also spoken. Its grammar includes features such as complex verb structures and consonant clusters, which can make it notably different from many neighboring languages.
