Which language family does Hungarian belong to?
Answer
Uralic
Answer
Uralic
Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family.
More specifically, Hungarian is commonly grouped with the Ugric languages, alongside Khanty and Mansi. Its closest widely accepted relatives are spoken east of the Ural Mountains, even though Hungarian itself is spoken in Central Europe.
Hungarian’s location has sometimes led people to classify it as a Turkic language, especially because Hungarian has historical contact with Turkic-speaking peoples and contains some Turkic loanwords. Genealogical classification, however, is based on systematic relationships in vocabulary, grammar, and sound patterns rather than geography or cultural contact.
Hungarian is the official language of Hungary and is also spoken by historic communities in countries including Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, and Ukraine. Finnish and Estonian are also Uralic languages, but they are not Hungarian’s closest relatives in every feature; shared family membership does not make the languages mutually intelligible.
