Georgia O’Keeffe repeatedly painted Cerro Pedernal as a distinctive red-and-gray hill near Abiquiu.
Cerro Pedernal is a flat-topped mountain in northern New Mexico. O’Keeffe could see it from her Abiquiu home, and its isolated profile became one of her recurring landscape motifs. She is often quoted as saying that God told her if she painted the mountain enough, she could have it.
The mountain’s recognizable form appears in multiple O’Keeffe works, sometimes as a distant mesa and sometimes as a simplified geometric presence. Her treatment of the landmark shows how she transformed a specific place into a personal visual symbol.
Cerro Pedernal is not the same as Ghost Ranch, another important O’Keeffe location. Ghost Ranch is a broader area west of Abiquiu; Pedernal is a separate landmark visible in the surrounding landscape.
