The London Eye has hosted the main midnight fireworks display in London’s New Year's Eve celebration since 2003.
The giant observation wheel stands on the South Bank of the River Thames, opposite Westminster. Its circular outline and illuminated capsules make it a highly visible focal point for television coverage and photographs. Fireworks are launched from the wheel, nearby barges, and locations along the river.
London’s large public New Year celebration grew out of millennium festivities held at the end of 1999. The city later developed a regular annual fireworks event, with the London Eye serving as its central landmark from 2003 onward. The event is organized around a midnight countdown and usually requires crowd-control measures and designated viewing areas.
Big Ben is often chosen as an answer because its clock is associated with the countdown, but it is not the landmark that hosts the main fireworks display. Big Ben is the nickname commonly used for the Great Bell at the Palace of Westminster.
