Which lake is the largest lake shared by Estonia and Russia?
Answer
Lake Peipus
Answer
Lake Peipus
Lake Peipus is the largest lake shared by Estonia and Russia.
The lake is a complex water body consisting of three connected parts: Lake Peipsi in the north, Lake Lämmijärv in the middle, and Lake Pihkva in the south. Together they cover about 3,555 square kilometres, making the system one of Europe’s largest transboundary lakes.
The Emajõgi River flows into the northern part from Lake Võrtsjärv, while the Narva River carries water from Lake Peipus toward the Gulf of Finland. The lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth of roughly 7 metres, so wind can quickly create difficult waves.
Lake Peipus is also historically significant. In 1242, the Battle on the Ice was fought on or near the frozen lake between forces associated with Novgorod and the Livonian Order. Modern communities around the shore depend on fishing, farming, and cross-border trade.
