Which lake is the largest in Central Europe and is often called the ‘Hungarian Sea’?

The story behind the answer

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and is often called the ‘Hungarian Sea.’

The lake lies almost entirely within Hungary and covers about 596 square kilometres. Its shallow, warm water has made it one of Central Europe’s best-known holiday destinations, with resorts including Siófok and Keszthely along its shores.

Balaton is relatively shallow for its size, with an average depth of roughly three metres. The western basin is generally deeper and more irregular, while the eastern basin is broader and shallower. The Zala River is its main tributary, and the Sió Canal provides an outlet toward the Danube.

The lake should not be confused with Lake Constance or Lake Geneva, both of which are larger or internationally shared. Balaton is primarily associated with Hungary and is a major feature of the country’s geography and tourism.
